At 13 eps in length, Haibane Renmei is too short (even though I'm only on ep 8, I know I'm going to be upset when there are no more to watch), but like Someday's Dreamers, it's amazingly high quality work for its tiny run. The animation is crisp and enjoyable, the voices are great, and the music is so good I actually listen to the opening theme every time (which has happened in only two other series). (Added in rereading: I listened to it again while looking for screenshots. It's so beautiful, I think it's what first grabbed me when I watched the first one.)
It's a little hard to describe what Haibane Renmei is about, partially because the series is stingy with the facts and details (which isn't a bad thing, just a little frustrating! :) ). You could say "after death, a few people are reborn in a protected town as angels"... but that's not exactly true and there's more to it than that. The characters do have little angel wings and halos, but there's something more complex going on. (And there are other enjoyable Biblical undertones to the story, but I can't go into them without spoiling.)
You can download it here with BT either in one file of 13 eps or broken down into two (1-10 and 11-13, for some odd reason). The series has been licensed though, so buy the DVDs after if you can (and they come with goodies, too!).
It's a little odd to be watching a series with no male main characters, but I got used to it really quickly... and more than that, began to like it. I've never sought out female-only companionship, but in Haibane Renmei I could see the good points of it.
Oh, and thanks to the folks who recommended this to me. It's come up on a couple peoples' lists, including from some folks twice! Everyone: Even if you're not looking for a new series now, grab a copy and save it. It's really worth it.
Oh, in Hunter x Hunter news, I bought a pack of playing cards with a different image on each card. Eee! There are some great ones! I need to fire up the old computer so that I can scan them and post them. (Wish I could run the scanner from the new computer...)
